Hugo Stainhaus is a figure who occupies a prominent place in the annals of Polish science. The memory of the brilliant mathematician, co-founder of the famous Lviv school of mathematics, is particularly vivid in Jasło, where he was born on January 14, 1887. Suffice it to mention that he is one of the patrons of the GEN Science Generator in Jasło. It is here that the 137th anniversary of Hugo Steinhaus’ birth will be celebrated this Friday.

“Mathematics was a theoretical science, but Steinhaus tried to find practical applications for his theories as well,” this quote from Mariusz Urbanek’s book about brilliant mathematicians belonging to the Lviv school of mathematics perfectly characterizes Hugon Steinhaus, who was born in Jasło. The events of 1948, when the outstanding mathematician delivered a paper “Ways of Applied Mathematics” at the national congress of mathematicians, can serve as confirmation of such a thesis. Shortly thereafter, he began to teach a seminar in Breslau, where students could explore the application of mathematics to issues in the natural, medical and social sciences.

One could talk about the life and scientific achievements of Hugo Steinhaus for hours. An opportunity to learn a little more about the brilliant mathematician will be the celebration of the 137th anniversary of his birth, which will take place this Friday (January 19) at the GEN Science Generator in Jasło.

The program of the event includes:

  • lecture by Mariusz Swiatek, director of the Regional Museum in Jasło – “Hugo Steinhaus. A mathematical genius native of Jasło”,
  • open lecture by Mariusz Urbanek, author of the book titled. “Geniuses. Lviv School of Mathematics” – “Hugo Steinhaus. A mathematician will do it better…”.

Jasielskie celebrations of the 137th anniversary of Hugo Steinhaus’ birth will begin at 10:00 am.
